CHAPTER ONE

Help Me

One of the most difficult things about being in the palace on what Keetsie thought was the third floor, without a view of anything but the next wall and windows, was that you couldn’t tell the time of day. She could guess by the hatch opening to deliver food. She knew whether it was day or night, but that was all, other than when it was morning, noon, or evening due to the delivery of breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

She had searched every nook and cranny for a way out, looked for a secret opening where there might be a tunnel, but found nothing: it was a very effective prison cell. There didn’t seem to be any locks on the doors or windows, which she could not understand. She most certainly was unable to open either of the doors, one leading from the bathroom to the hall or the other leading from the bedroom to the same hallway. She had tried them both numerous times. Each of the windows seemed to be welded shut. Each day she tried to open something, just in case, by chance, they would open, but so far, nothing. They remained as locked as the day before, as if they had an invisible locking mechanism and key.

As she sat thinking about this, she realised that these windows and doors were not under a usual locking system; they were being kept shut by a powerful spell of some type. There was no surprise here. From the purple lake to the blue and red, copper and gold foliage on the trees and bushes, it was all ruled by magic.

Although she was a faerie with all the powers a faerie should have, she had no idea how to use magic or cast a spell. Artika, her twin sister, had told her once in a conversation that as a faerie princess she had greater powers than most of the subjects of Ilithia. It should follow that Keetsie would possess these extra powers as well; she just didn’t know how to use them. She needed help, but the only creature she had had any contact with since being imprisoned was the servant who brought her food and drink. She thought this creature might be her only chance.

The servant appeared three times a day to place food through the hatch in the door. It never appeared that this creature had to unlock this hatch, so it was quite possible that this servant could also have the ability to open the entire door. It was worth a try to ask the servant to set her free. It concerned her that this faerie or pixie may go straight to King Ryanelle if she requested to be let out, but there weren’t many choices. The hatch in the door was no more than five inches square, so that could not be a way for Keetsie to escape, but hopefully the servant would feel for her plight and let her have her freedom. Yes, it
